If you have a Japanese Sony PSP you can also benefit from the changes Sony has made to the firmware in time for the North American release. The new firmware doesn't add any new functionality, but fixes a few bugs and adds a couple of nifty things to the music and video player.

Read on for information on how to download the firmware and update your PSP.

Firmware changes
Both the video and the music player remembers where they were when the PSP was put in sleep mode and automatically jumps back to the same position when it is turned on again. The video player also remembers which screen mode that was selected between videos, so you won't have to change for every new video you play. There are also a bunch of new languages added and the PSP recognizes filenames with accented characters.

Two ways to update
There are two ways to update the firmware, you can either use WiFi to automatically update, or you can download the update and transfer it via a USB cable. In both cases you need about 14 MB free space available on the Memory Stick in your PSP.

Network Update
To update via the network you will need to have access to a wireless network connected to the internet. If you have this setup already you can just start up the PSP, with the AC adapter connected, and move to the Settings menu on the far left and select the topmost menu option called Network Update. You will have to choose which WiFi connection you want to use before the PSP can download and run the update. After this you only need to follow the on-screen instructions to install the new firmware.

USB Update
If you don't have a wireless LAN you can download the new firmware and copy it to the Memory Stick of the PSP yourself. First you will need to go to the link below and click on one of the "Download" graphics, anyone will do as they point to the same file. Save the file, called EBOOT.PBP, somewhere on your computer. There's no need to worry about the page being in Japanese, you don't need to understand any of it.

Firmware link on the Japanese Playstation site:
http://www.playstation.jp/psp/update/ud_03.html

Now you will have to connect the PSP to your computer and select USB Mode on the PSP. When you have done this you will need to create a new folder on the PSP, go to the "PSP/Game" folder and create a new folder called "Updates". After this you can copy the file you downloaded into this directory.

Start up the PSP, with the AC adapter connected, and you will find that there is a new menu option under the Game menu, which is to the far right. At the bottom of the Game menu there is an option called "Memory Stick", select this and you should be shown an icon and the name "PSP Update ver 1.50". Select this item and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Final notes on both update variants
You must never turn off the PSP during an update, or remove the Memory Stick or anything like that, as it could corrupt the firmware. Just follow the instructions and you should be fine though. When the upgrade is finished the PSP will restart and now run the new firmware. If you like you can try the new functionality or go to the Settings menu and look through all the new languages available to make sure the update worked OK. When the update is finished you can remove the EBOOT.PBP file from the Updates directory if you used the USB update.

What does this mean?
Guest - error 80020148 Unregistered | 2005-08-26 14:42:33
Apparently, this error means the following:
80020148 - PRX type unsupported / Missing
PSAR file

Which basically means there is something wrong with the program you are trying to start. Either it's corrupted, or it's not properly signed by Sony, i.e. a non-supported homebrew application.

If you get this error when trying to upgrade to a new firmware version, I've seen indications that you shouldn't use the Japanese firmware on American PSP's. It could also mean that there was a problem with the file transfer, so downloading the firmware again and trying one more time might do the trick.

i downloaded the new 2.5 on an american psp and it took up memory space but it still shows as if no other updates are available and i still have the same 1.5 version on it.I connected the psp to the computer when i downloaeded it i saved it straight to the psp using the memory stick duo/psp/games/update instead of my computer it took up memory space but i dont see it.it says "a later version of the system software is already installed. there is no need to update. what did i do wrong wgen i go to the file it says it cant be veiwed because it cant recognize where it came from so it asks me to look for the file ext.which lead me to here.

If you have an American PSP, make sure you download the american update and I'd recommend you only download from the official Sony page to make sure it's the correct file. Even if you've already downloaded the correct file from the correct place, you could try to do it again, as the download could have been corrupted.

If the PSP can't find the update file you could check to see that it's been saved to the memory stick and is in the correct directory (see above in the article). You could also check that the directory name is correct, maybe try to delete it and recreate it with all UPPER CASE characters, just to make sure.

If all this fails the only option I can see is to try to find a Wi-Fi connection to internet and do the Network Update instead.

Guest - update, this is great! Unregistered | 2005-12-22 02:24:27
I upgraded to 2.6 now, which has a great web browser, just like the 2.0 and everything. Now even having RSS capabilities. Now, to put movies on the psp download psp video 9 from somewhere and it will tell you what to do. For pictures, and songs just hook psp up to your computer, and open up its folder. It should show music, and just drag files into that.

Olle Johansson - PSP Region Encoding Unregistered | 2006-11-28 02:19:25
There is no region encoding for games on the PSP, so you will be able to play games bought anywhere on any PSP. Just go ahead and import those Japanese games!

I play games from Japan, USA and UK on my Japanese PSP without any problems.

Ahmet - How to update your psp(tried a Unregistered | 2006-12-31 17:57:58

eboot.pbp is the file which you add on.plug the psp into the charger(AC adapter)and connect the psp to the pc. open the psp file create a game file if there isnt one and then click in game and create an UPDATE file(make sure u type update in capitals).copy the eboot file into the UPDATE file and dont turn the psp off.Exit usb mode and go into the game bit on the psp screen, scroll down to the memory stick and press enter.enter the update file and accept the terms. wait for it to update itself and make sure you press enter when it says restart.Hope i helped, it took ages to write
