Are you PSPnuts? |

Welcome to this site about the Sony Playstation Portable!
This site was mainly created because there was no easy way to find information about how to use the Sony PSP together with Linux. But hopefully it will be more than that as I'm planning on writing reviews of the PSP games I have at the moment (Ridge Racers, Vampire Chronicle, Lumines, Wipeout Pure and Untold Legends: Brotherhood of Steel).
If you have something you think will fit on this page, please don't hesitate to send it in. It doesn't have to be specific to Linux either, your experiences together with Mac OSX, Windows or *BSD is just as interesting as well as general information about the Sony PSP. |

Update Firmware on Japanese PSP |

If you have a Japanese Sony PSP you can also benefit from the changes Sony
has made to the firmware in time for the North American release. The
new firmware doesn't add any new functionality, but fixes a few bugs
and adds a couple of nifty things to the music and video player.
Read on for information on how to download the firmware and update your PSP.
Firmware changes
Both
the video and the music player remembers where they were when the PSP
was put in sleep mode and automatically jumps back to the same position
when it is turned on again. The video player also remembers which
screen mode that was selected between videos, so you won't have to
change for every new video you play. There are also a bunch of new
languages added and the PSP recognizes filenames with accented
characters.
Two ways to update
There are two ways to update the firmware, you can either use WiFi to
automatically update, or you can download the update and transfer it
via a USB cable. In both cases you need about 14 MB free space
available on the Memory Stick in your PSP.
Network Update
To update via the network you will need to have access to a wireless
network connected to the internet. If you have this setup already you
can just start up the PSP, with the AC adapter connected, and move to
the Settings menu on the far left and select the topmost menu option
called Network Update. You will have to choose which WiFi connection
you want to use before the PSP can download and run the update. After
this you only need to follow the on-screen instructions to install the
new firmware.
USB Update
If you don't have a wireless LAN you can download the new firmware and
copy it to the Memory Stick of the PSP yourself. First you will need to
go to the link below and click on one of the "Download" graphics,
anyone will do as they point to the same file. Save the file, called
EBOOT.PBP, somewhere on your computer. There's no need to worry about
the page being in Japanese, you don't need to understand any of it.

Now you will have to connect the PSP to your computer and select USB
Mode on the PSP. When you have done this you will need to create a new
folder on the PSP, go to the "PSP/Game" folder and create a new folder
called "Updates". After this you can copy the file you downloaded into
this directory.
Start up the PSP, with the AC adapter connected, and you will find that
there is a new menu option under the Game menu, which is to the far
right. At the bottom of the Game menu there is an option called "Memory
Stick", select this and you should be shown an icon and the name "PSP
Update ver 1.50". Select this item and then follow the on-screen
instructions.
Final notes on both update variants
You must never turn off the PSP during an update, or remove the Memory
Stick or anything like that, as it could corrupt the firmware. Just
follow the instructions and you should be fine though. When the upgrade
is finished the PSP will restart and now run the new firmware. If you
like you can try the new functionality or go to the Settings menu and
look through all the new languages available to make sure the update
worked OK. When the update is finished you can remove the EBOOT.PBP
file from the Updates directory if you used the USB update.
