Welcome to this site about the Sony Playstation Portable!

This site was mainly created because there was no easy way to find information about how to use the Sony PSP together with Linux. But hopefully it will be more than that as I'm planning on writing reviews of the PSP games I have at the moment (Ridge Racers, Vampire Chronicle, Lumines, Wipeout Pure and Untold Legends: Brotherhood of Steel).

If you have something you think will fit on this page, please don't hesitate to send it in. It doesn't have to be specific to Linux either, your experiences together with Mac OSX, Windows or *BSD is just as interesting as well as general information about the Sony PSP.

This is a list of things I'd like Sony to fix for the PSP, to truly make it into the ultimate handheld console. Some have already been hinted at, some are small annoyances I would personally like removed and some are my own ideas of extending the functionality of the PSP.

Read on for the full list.

A couple of obvious things haven't been added to this list, as I don't think it's necessary to mention them since everyone already has voiced their concerns over and over again. These are things like battery times, dead pixels, price tag on the PSP itself as well as games, not being able to create UMD's etc.

The list isn't sorted in any way, neither by importance to me or by how big the change is.

  • Remove automatic loading of games, as well as jumping to the game menu when the UMD has loaded. If I want to play a game when I start my PSP I will select it, when I don't want I shouldn't have to go through the hassle of jumping out of the game first.
  • Better text input, a keyboard would be nice, but also a better software solution, possibly including dictionaries, like the T9 function on cell phones.
  • Easier way to add videos, without having to rename them and place them in a secret special folder. As well as the ability to play full size videos that utilizes the entire beautiful screen.
  • Personalization and customization of the XMB menu system, choosing colors, background images, possibly even rearranging the options and adding new ones, like shortcuts to functionality that lies deeper in the menu.
  • Better playlist functionality for music, browsing by artist and album, as well as creating internal playlists easily.
  • I'd love to be able to hook up the PSP to a television to be able to play games on a full screen, to watch photo slideshows and movies.
  • Basic PIM functionality would be great, a calendar, todo list, address book etc.
  • Syncing with cell phones through the IR port, or something, anything, to make use of it!
  • Letting anyone create programs for the PSP, this would open up a whole new world of things to do with the PSP.
  • Web surfing on the PSP would be nice, but isn't a necessity.

are you completely unaware of the homebrew network?? all of this... 9/10 is already done in your list... except the first. still autoloads. lets go down the list:

IR can be used for ps2, xbox 360, and a numerous other electronics with controllers (tv's, vcrs, dvd players, etc.) the IR port is also compatible with targus keyboards and a few optical wireless mice.

easier way to add videos... PSP Video 9 for windows.

XMB menu system can be completely forgotten thru lua or any of the homebrew OS's that exist.

get a music and pix viewer... adds not only playlist functionality but the ability to listen to music and look at photos simultaneously.

its called PSP2TV

its called pIrc... on top of that, theres a prog called PSPDA

see my answer to question two

its called homebrew... for firmware 1.5 only

*slaps forhead* COMES with 2.0, available in 1.5 with 2ch browser or tedzero....

another thing the psp could include is a massenger/e-mail system that allows u to talk to other psp friends and owners, also allowing u to contact friends and family on msn or other instant messanging programs

Someone suggested setting the parental level to 1 and then most games will ask you to enter a code, if you set the code to 0000 you have to just press X to go into the game or O to go to the menu. Not ideal but a good workaround for the moment i thought!

This was written months before the PSP was released in the US, and published here on this site a couple of weeks after.

Sure, many of the things on the list can be done now, over 1.5 years after I wrote the article. It only shows that my predictions have come true, and my needs fulfilled.

At the time I wrote the article, there were no usable hacks out, and v1.50 of the firmware hadn't even been released. But even if it can be done today using homebrew, I still want it out of the box, without any hassle.

As for PSP2TV and the other available gadgets to get TV output, they are either using a crappy conversion or require a modification. I want the same VGA output available as in the develper versions.

Rants are much more effective if you get your facts straight, just a tip for the future.
