Are you PSPnuts?

Welcome to this site about the Sony Playstation Portable!

This site was mainly created because there was no easy way to find information about how to use the Sony PSP together with Linux. But hopefully it will be more than that as I'm planning on writing reviews of the PSP games I have at the moment (Ridge Racers, Vampire Chronicle, Lumines, Wipeout Pure and Untold Legends: Brotherhood of Steel).

If you have something you think will fit on this page, please don't hesitate to send it in. It doesn't have to be specific to Linux either, your experiences together with Mac OSX, Windows or *BSD is just as interesting as well as general information about the Sony PSP.

This is a short introduction on the file structure of the Memory Stick in the PSP. It describes what the different directories are for and where to place the files you want to use on the PSP.

If you want the PSP to be able to use the files you save on the Memory Stick you will need to place them in different directories, depending on what type of file it is.

After you've formatted your Memory Stick you should have a directory called "psp" in the root and below that there will be four directories: game, music, photo and savedata

Here is a tree structure of the file system on my Memory Stick:

/mnt/psp
|-- memstick.ind
|-- MP_ROOT
| `-- 100MNV01
|-- mstk_pro.ind
`-- psp
    |-- game
    |-- music
    |-- photo
    `-- savedata
        |-- ULJS00001000
        | |-- data.bin
        | |-- icon0.png
        | |-- icon1.pmf
        | |-- param.sfo
        | `-- pic1.png
        `-- ULJS00001100
            |-- data.bin
            |-- icon0.png
            |-- icon1.pmf
            |-- param.sfo
            `-- pic1.png

Games

The game directory is where downloadable games will be saved, at the moment there are no such games available so I haven't been able to try this.

MP3 Music

In the music directory you can save mp3 files. You can either copy the files directly to the music directory, or you can create sub-directories to divide the mp3 files into different "groups". These will show up in the music player as different genres so that it's possible to play only one type of music. You can only have one level of sub-directories, if you add any more it won't work.

In each directory you can also save a .m3u file which contain the filenames of the mp3 files in the directory in the order you want them to be shown in the list. The name of this file will override the directory as the name of the group for the music in this directory. Any files in the directory that aren't listed in the m3u-file won't show up in the music player, and you can't have more than one in each directory.

Photo directory

To look at pictures on your Sony PSP you can save them in the photo directory. It will only work with JPEG images though. The same thing about sub-directories applies to photos as for music.

Game Save Data

The savedata directory is where the games save the progress information and any other data they want. These files can be saved on your hard drive if you want to move them to another Memory Stick, or as a backup if you should lose or destroy your Memory Stick or the data gets corrupted in some way. You can also send these files to friends so that they can save them on the Memory Stick of their PSP to make use of your game progression or watch the cool replay you saved in Ridge Racers.

To find out which game each directory is for, look at the first four letters and five numbers. These correspond to the product code of the game it is for, this code can be found on the bottom on the side of the game box.

Guest - FIRMWARE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Unregistered | 2005-06-20 01:32:07
where the fuck can i get any firmware between 1.0 and 1.5????!?! im losing my mind.
Guest - US UMD on Japanese PSP Unregistered | 2005-06-20 02:48:54
Unfortunately you are out of luck, there is currently no way to play UMD's bought in America on a Japanese PSP. UMD's are ergion encoded just like DVD movies and can only be played if the system has the correct region. American UMD's are Region 1, while the Japanese PSP is only able to play UMD's of Region 2.

The only firmware before 1.50 was 1.0, which was installed on early Japanese PSP's. If you already have a newer firmware version than this, there is no way to go back to a lower version. Sony has never released a firmware version below 1.50 available for download.

Hey, we are working on some new cracks as to forcing the newest of updates (1.51 and 1.52) to do a "roll-back" like on windows machines to where we can make it so the 1.0 firmware is install-able again so anyone looking for a cracks for 1.51 and 1.52 won't be left in teh dust. I think we almost have it, we just need some time to bypass the encryption. - Cooldan1

Sounds great, if you can pull something like that off you'd be much appreciated by a lot of people, including me! Until then though, there's still no way of doing it at the moment, AFAIK.

Anonymous Unregistered | 2006-12-09 06:06:03
for the people with region issues in umd moview playback, you can try devhook, and emulate the firmware of the region that your movie is from. i.e emulate us fw 2.60 on jap psp etc., i think that would work.

for the guy asking about umd conversion, it would be better just to d/l the movie from a p2p client in avi format and then convert it with psp9 and watch it from your memcard
you can get a full feature film down to about 200mb or less on minumum settings, less if its animation

for the other people who cant upload to a memcard , go to my computer, the psp is now labelled as a removable drive, access it from there

last word, get devhook, its the best solution for folk who want muli region, homebrew and the ability to play the newer (forced update) umd`s/iso`s
it even works for the dreaded ta-082 motherboard
im living proof, i have a japansese factory 2.60 with ta-082 board, and it plays homebrew on emulated fw1.50 no worries
no need to downgrade or risk a brick, you get the best of both worlds .
google devhook

you people are useless. no at3 cannot be fully converted from mp3, fw higher than 1.50 CAN be downgraded to make cfw, there are millions of files to shove in ur memstick root (try PICTURE for a start) , and full game downloads r only on cfw and r illegal and will kill ur psp. any free ones u find are not freeware they are shareware or hidden spyware. so wise up and use ur psp p roperly. P.S. - ofw 5 .01 is ''the winner''.
