This is a short introduction on the file structure of the Memory Stick in the PSP. It describes what the different directories are for and where to place the files you want to use on the PSP.
If you want the PSP to be able to use the files you save on the Memory Stick you will need to place them in different directories, depending on what type of file it is.
After you've formatted your Memory Stick you should have a directory called "psp" in the root and below that there will be four directories: game, music, photo and savedata
Here is a tree structure of the file system on my Memory Stick:

Games
The game directory is where downloadable games will be saved, at the moment there are no such games available so I haven't been able to try this.
MP3 Music
In the music directory you can save mp3 files. You can either copy the files directly to the music directory, or you can create sub-directories to divide the mp3 files into different "groups". These will show up in the music player as different genres so that it's possible to play only one type of music. You can only have one level of sub-directories, if you add any more it won't work.
In each directory you can also save a .m3u file which contain the filenames of the mp3 files in the directory in the order you want them to be shown in the list. The name of this file will override the directory as the name of the group for the music in this directory. Any files in the directory that aren't listed in the m3u-file won't show up in the music player, and you can't have more than one in each directory.
Photo directory
To look at pictures on your Sony PSP you can save them in the photo directory. It will only work with JPEG images though. The same thing about sub-directories applies to photos as for music.
Game Save Data
The savedata directory is where the games save the progress information and any other data they want. These files can be saved on your hard drive if you want to move them to another Memory Stick, or as a backup if you should lose or destroy your Memory Stick or the data gets corrupted in some way. You can also send these files to friends so that they can save them on the Memory Stick of their PSP to make use of your game progression or watch the cool replay you saved in Ridge Racers.
To find out which game each directory is for, look at the first four letters and five numbers. These correspond to the product code of the game it is for, this code can be found on the bottom on the side of the game box. |
